Smugglers Caught

MOSCOW -- Border guards in Kazakhstan on Friday blocked an attempt to smuggle 160 kilograms of caviar to Russia, a news report said.

Border guards at the western Kazakhstan checkpoint of Atyrau stopped a Russian-made jeep bearing Kazakh license plates, Interfax reported, citing a local administration official.

The caviar was packed in small cans bearing the trademark logo of Russia's Astrakhan fisheries, the report said. Authorities are investigating who produced and packed the caviar.

Caviar smuggling is a problem in the countries near the Caspian Sea, including Kazakhstan, and overfishing has led to a declining numbers of Caspian sturgeon, the source of most caviar.
