Resignation Hits Zloty

WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's currency weakened Thursday on the news that Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek decided to dismiss one of his two deputies, who later resigned.

Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Tomaszewski, who was also the interior minister, said he resigned because a special court confirmed its investigation of whether he lied in a 1997 statement that denied any collaboration with communist secret police.

Partly in response to the Tomaszewski news, Poland's currency fell Thursday, dropping to 4.0305 to the U.S. dollar from the opening figure of 3.9784.
