Rails Minister Fired

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin fired the railways minister Thursday, adding the job to a deputy prime minister's responsibilities, the presidential press service said.

No reason was given for Railways Minister Vladimir Starostenko's removal. Yeltsin named First Deputy Prime Minister Nikolai Aksyonenko to assume the portfolio in addition to his other responsibilities.

Aksyonenko, who was railways minister before being promoted last June, oversees economic policy.
