Kazakh Detained

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- A Kazakh man has been detained for complicity in the sale of 30 MiG-21 fighter planes to North Korea, a Kazakh government spokesman said Tuesday.

Seoul accused Kazakhstan last month of delivering the jets to North Korea earlier this year. A few days earlier, President Nursultan Nazarbayev had fired Defense Minister Mukhtar Altynbayev and the chairman of the State Security Committee, Nurtai Abykayev, for violating military sales regulations.

The man who had been detained had received $1.8 million for serving as a go-between in the deal, an official said.
