Japan Sends Aid

MOSCOW -- The Far East received medical equipment worth $340,000 from Japan on Thursday under an aid program to alleviate shortages at regional hospitals, a news report said.

The equipment and medicine will be distributed to seven hospitals on Sakhalin Island, Itar-Tass reported.

Japan agreed to donate $10 million in medical aid to the Far East when Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi visited Russia last November. Japan has donated more than $22 million in medical supplies to Far Eastern hospitals and clinics since 1993, according to Russian news reports.
