Helicopter Missing

MOSCOW -- A helicopter was missing in the Far North and the seven people aboard were feared dead, emergency officials said Wednesday.

The Mi-8 helicopter went down Tuesday night on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, and rescue teams had to call off their search in the frigid region at nightfall, Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said.

Beltsov said there were three crew members and four passengers aboard the helicopter when it disappeared.

The southern tip of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago is located about 1,900 kilometers north of Moscow, between the Barents and Kara seas.
