Gunmen Seek Talks

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- Radical Islamic gunmen holding Japanese and Kyrgyz hostages in Kyrgyzstan's southern mountains want to start formal talks to end the three-week crisis, a negotiator said Friday.

Tursunbek Akunov returned to Bishkek on Thursday after spending almost two weeks with the guerrillas and meeting their Uzbek commander Yunus Abdrakhmanov.

Kyrgyzstan has allowed local people to talk to the gunmen, but has refused to send government or army officials to negotiate.
