Copper Price High

LONDON -- Copper pushed to its highest close for 16 months at the London Metal Exchange on Thursday while nickel ended unchanged after volatile trading.

Base metals have surged in recent days as growing confidence over global economic prospects fueled speculative and some consumer buying.

But technical analysts studying historical price charts say many of the gains have been too fast and need correction.

Three months copper futures ended the afternoon curb session strongly at $1,803 a metric ton, the highest finish since May 1998 and up $17 from Wednesday's afternoon curb close.
