Cherkessia Bombings

MOSCOW -- Bombs tore through two cafes and fire destroyed a third in the volatile Karachayevo-Cherkessia region, but no one was hurt in the Wednesday attacks, Interfax reported.

All three cafes were owned by ethnic Karachais, and police were not ruling out that the establishments were hit because of their owners' ethnicity, the news agency said.

Tensions have been high in Karachayevo-Cherkessia since an ethnic Karachai, Vladimir Semyonov, was chosen to lead the republic in an election last May tainted by allegations of voter fraud.

The loser, an ethnic Cherkess named Stanislav Derev, never conceded defeat. Several court rulings were made on the case before the national Supreme Court finally declared the election valid.
