Cash for Small Farmers

PARIS -- France will plow ahead with plans to favor quality farming over mass production despite an outcry from large grain and oilseeds producers, Agriculture Minister Jean Glavany said in an interview Thursday.

France will redistribute 2 billion francs ($330 million) in European Union and French funds away from big farms to help smaller producers next year, even though that "will not please everybody," Glavany was quoted as saying by the daily France Soir.

Some 80 percent of French farm aid goes to 20 percent of its farmers, mostly bulk producers. The Socialist-led government believes this system does not sufficiently reward quality production, environmental measures or job creation.
