Uzbeks to Vote

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Uzbekistan will hold its first presidential elections since 1991 in January 2000, President Islam Karimov announced Thursday.

The vote was due to take place in 1997 but was postponed after Karimov, Uzbekistan's former Communist boss, held a referendum to extend his term. The election violated Uzbek election laws but went unchallenged. The Central Asian nation will hold parliamentary elections Dec. 5 and presidential polls Jan. 9.
