Uzbeks Sentenced

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Uzbekistan has conducted a closed-door trial of six men in which five members of a banned opposition group were sentenced to between eight and 15 years in jail, human rights groups said Wednesday.

The sentenced were all members of a group accused by Uzbek President Islam Karimov of organizing a wave of bomb attacks last February that he said were intended to assassinate him.

Details of the trial were scarce as the media, Western diplomats and human rights groups were banned.
