Sun Designs Java Chip

PALO ALTO, California -- Sun Microsystems is designing a new computer chip geared toward its Java programming language, setting up a possible faceoff with Intel.

The new MAJC - pronounced "magic'' - semiconductor is "intended for the rapidly emerging market of applications that blend communications, exciting visual images, sound and compute functionality,'' according to a draft press release from Sun. The new chips are expected to compete with the market-dominating Pentiums and other microprocessors made by Intel.
