Steel Ruling Rejected

TOKYO -- Japan's largest steelmaker criticized Tuesday a U.S. ruling that Japanese steel imports are harming the American steel industry.

Nippon Steel Corp. described the ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission as "extremely regrettable."

The commission issued a preliminary ruling Monday that there is a "reasonable indication'' that U.S. steelmakers are being harmed by Japanese and South Korean imports.

Nippon Steel said the company will defend its position that no damage has been inflicted on the U.S. industry.

U.S. steel producers allege that steel beams from the two Asian countries are being dumped on the U.S. market.
