Russian Calls for Ban

MOSCOW -- Russian athletics chief Valentin Balakhnichyov has called on the IAAF to ban Cuba's high jump world record holder Javier Sotomayor.

"I don't see any reason why Sotomayor should be allowed to compete in Seville. If you been caught doping, you must serve time. As simple as that," Balakhnichyov, president of the Russian Athletics Federation, said Thursday.

The Cuban tested positive for cocaine at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, earlier this month and was subsequently stripped of the gold medal. The International Amateur Athletic Federation also said they had no immediate plans to suspend Sotomayor.
