Raisa Gorbachev's Condition Worsens

Raisa Gorbachev's condition worsened Wednesday night, Russian television reported Thursday from Germany, where she is undergoing treatment for acute leukemia.

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev was shown on NTV television Thursday saying that his wife had complications that weakened her respiratory system, and that her condition might prevent her from undergoing a spinal tap to measure the results of chemotherapy.

"It is five days after the intensive therapy was carried out," Gorbachev said.

"The most serious tests connected with spinal puncture have yet to be done. But she is in such a condition now that I don't know if it will be possible or not."

Gorbachev has been at his wife's bedside at the University Hospital in M?nster for the past 19 days. He has been joined by his daughter, Irina. "Generally speaking, things are very hard," Gorbachev said Thursday.
