Raisa Finds Donor

MOSCOW -- Former Soviet first lady Raisa Gorbachev may soon undergo a bone marrow transplant because a potential donor has been found, the hospital where she is being treated announced Thursday.

Gorbachev, 67, has been receiving treatment for leukemia at University Hospital in M?nster, Germany, since July 25. Her husband, former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, has been at her bedside every day.

ORT television reported that the donor was Gorbachev's sister and that her marrow matched Gorbachev's exactly. The station said the hospital was planning to give Gorbachev another round of chemotherapy.

Unlike the wives of earlier Soviet leaders, Raisa Gorbachev led an active public life.
