Planes-for-Gas Deal

KIEV -- Prime Minister Valery Pustovoitenko has confirmed Ukraine's intention to transfer Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers to clear the nation's gas supply debt to Russia.

Pustovoitenko, speaking Tuesday, did not specify the number of aircraft in the proposed deal.

Ukraine has had about 40 bombers, capable of carrying nuclear cruise missiles, since the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union. Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly failed to agree on their sale in the past six years, with Russia emphasizing the poor condition of the aircraft.
