Pinochet Not Well

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Chile said Monday that former dictator Augusto Pinochet's health is worsening and he may not be able to withstand a lengthy trial in Europe on charges of human rights abuses.

"It is hard to imagine that he could withstand a prolonged trial," Foreign Minister Juan Gabriel Valdes said on Chilean radio.

Pinochet is under house arrest in Britain and awaiting possible extradition to Spain to face trial.

In London, a spokeswoman for the Home Office, Britain's interior ministry, said: "The case is currently before the courts and it is a matter for them, not for us."

A medical report commissioned by the Chilean government in July said Pinochet's diabetes was worsening and threatening his life.
