Pasko Case Questioned

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East -- Rear Admiral Nikolai Sotskov, chief of the Federal Security Service's Pacific Fleet department, said the verdict passed on military journalist Grigory Pasko is "very soft" and was due to "unprecedented pressure from the mass media and human rights organizations."

Sotskov was quoted by the weekly Zolotoi Rog as saying that there was ample evidence for Pasko's guilt, although "certain technical errors" had been revealed during legal proceedings.

In his opinion, foreign media are deliberately inflating the importance of the case to show that "Russia cannot control the processing of its nuclear waste."
