Milosevic Call

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- Serbia's influential Orthodox Church Wednesday demanded the resignation of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, saying he was leading the country "into certain disaster."

In its open appeal - the second in recent months - the church said it made its decision because of the "tragic state into which our people has been brought, primarily in Kosovo, but also in the entire country, especially by the recent war and NATO bombing."

The appeal also urged Serbian President Milan Milutinovic to resign. The two should resign "if they really do not wish to turn their people and state into their hostages and take them into a certain disaster, to enable other people as soon as possible to take over helm of the country and take the people out of the blind alley," a church statement said.
