Kazakh Officials Fired

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ousted his defense minister and security chief over a scandal that involved last spring's transfer of six MiG fighter jets from Kazakhstan.

Defense Minister Mukhtar Altynbayev and chairman of the State Security Committee Nurtai Abykayev were dismissed Monday for a "blatant violation of the rules of selling military equipment," the president's press service said.

Nazarbayev also ousted a number of senior Defense Ministry and State Security Committee officials, as well as top executives from a company that was involved in the scandal, the report said.
