Japan Moves on Labels

TOKYO -- Japan took another step Tuesday toward requiring the labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, an idea embraced by consumer groups but a potential source of trade friction with U.S. farm interests.

A government committee Tuesday issued a final proposal recommending that standards be set by next April for labeling foods made from genetically altered crops, with mandatory compliance by April 2001.

The United States has warned that mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods could arouse unfounded safety fears among consumers.
