Hostages Send Word

MONROVIA, Liberia (Reuters) -- Western relief workers kidnapped in Liberia have made radio contact with their charity groups, raising hope that they may soon be released.

"They all remain well and unharmed," a spokeswoman for the British group Merlin said after hearing from hostage Mike Roe, a doctor, in the African bush. "It seems that the whole group [of six] is together."

She said the four Britons, an Italian and a Norwegian had been moved north close to the border with Guinea. They were abducted in northwestern Liberia on Wednesday by gunmen whose identities and motives are unknown. Liberia has reported a rebel invasion in the area, which borders trouble spots in both Sierra Leone and Guinea.
