Georgian Police Shot

TBILISI, Georgia -- Unidentified gunmen killed three police officers in Georgia early Friday, near the border of the breakaway republic of Abkhazia, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the city of Zugdidi, 300 kilometers west of Tbilisi, the capital.

Inga Metreveli, spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry, said the three officers were patrolling in the center of the city when they were shot at 3 a.m. Two guns and several grenades were taken from them.

Although the incident occurred near the border with the troubled Gali district of separatist Abkhazia, there was no indication that the shooting was related to the violence there, Metreveli said.
