Fleet Bread Supply Cut

MOSCOW -- Russia's Baltic Fleet is urgently trying to secure bread supplies for its sailors after a Kaliningrad baking plant stopped supplying it with bread over mounting debts.

The baking plant, located in the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, where the fleet has its base, says the fleet owes it 3.2 million rubles ($128,000) for bread supplies. Plant director Nina Durneva demanded that at least half of the debt be covered before supplies resume.

The plant agreed Tuesday to supply 2 tons of bread to the fleet's main hospital, out of 7 to 8 tons the fleet used to consume a day.

Fleet spokesman Alexander Su-khanov was quoted as saying by Interfax that fleet officials were in talks with other baking plants in the area, and that the fleet could also bake its own bread.
