Ex-Republics Training

MOSCOW -- Hundreds of troops from four former Soviet republics were training Tuesday to practice defense techniques against cruise missiles and enemy planes, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

The Comradeship-in-Arms '99 exercise, which began Monday in the Astrakhan region, involves about 1,000 soldiers and air defense weapons from Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

Russian air force chief Anatoly Kornukov, who supervises the maneuvers, said the decisive stage was expected Wednesday, followed by a meeting of defense ministers from the former Soviet republics the next day to analyze the results of the exercises.
