Computer Geeks Revel at Festival

HELSINKI, Finland -- Thousands of computer-obsessed teenagers took their PCs to a Finnish hockey arena over the weekend for a three-day, nonstop session on the keyboards at what was billed as the world's biggest computer geek festival.

From last Friday to Sunday night, some 3,000 self-confessed nerds hunched over more than 2,000 personal computers, surfed the Internet, played Quake and other web games, and showed off their skills in programming and multimedia competitions, organizers said.

The most physical discipline on display: floppy-throwing.

The majority were Finns - predominantly boys, of course - but participants also came from all over the world.

One of the few females spotted said she came to accompany her boyfriend and knew little about computers, but she knew how to get the "nerd feeling."

"I don't intend to take a single shower during the whole time," 16-year-old Toni said.
