Colombian Attack

BOGOTA, Colombia -- The death toll from a weekend paramilitary attack on rebel territory in Colombia's oil-rich northeast has reached 29 and was expected to rise, federal investigators said Monday.

The dead f found in the town of La Gabarra f were either civilians massacred by rightists or guerrillas and paramilitaries killed in combat, Jaime Barreto, chief investigator for the federal prosecutor's office in Norte de Santander state, said.

The region is a major arms-trafficking corridor, and also is replete with illegal plantations of coca, the plant used to make cocaine.
