Capital Boosts Security

MOSCOW -- Moscow police said Tuesday they were beefing up security measures in the capital due to an outburst of violence in Russia's unruly North Caucasus.

"We will be tightening security arrangements and taking other precautionary measures," a police spokesman said. Interfax quoted the Interior Ministry as saying other Russian cities were taking similar measures.

The police spokesman said security would be tightened at key sites like railway stations, with more frequent police checks of citizens' documents. But he added there were no plans to deploy more police on the streets.

He also denied any link with political tensions in Russia proper.
