British Beef Ban Stays

MOSCOW -- Russia will not lift a ban on imports of British beef due to concerns it might contain mad cow disease despite the European Union's decision to drop its own embargo, Russia's chief veterinarian said Wednesday.

"Scientists have not definitely solved the problem of this product's safety, so we have no intention of lifting the ban," said Vyacheslav Avilov, head of the veterinary department at the Agriculture Ministry.

A global ban on British beef was imposed in 1996 as mad cow disease was discovered in British cattle and the government admitted a possible link with a human brain disorder.
