Boeing Signs 767 Deal With Ilyushin

U.S.-based Boeing Corp. said Thursday that it was working with Russia's Ilyushin design bureau on plans to modify Boeing 767 passenger jets into cargo planes.

"We have Ilyushin engineers working on the project to convert these planes," said Sergei Kravchenko, director of Boeing's cooperation with Russia and other former Soviet states.

Ilyushin is the designer of aircraft such as the new Il-96T wide-body transport plane, which has not yet gone into commercial production due to a lack of funding despite winning U.S. Federal Aviation Administration approval in July.

Kravchenko said the project marked a new stage in cooperation with Russia and that by the end of this year some 35 Russian engineers could be involved in conversion efforts at Boeing's Moscow design center.
