Bans Spur Advances

NEW DELHI, India -- U.S. nuclear sanctions levied on India after nuclear tests last year have spurred the domestic development of technology components, a leading defense official said.

"It would be fair to say that economic sanctions and technology control denials imposed on India have not had a major impact on the economy or on ongoing technology projects," said K. Santhanam, chief adviser to India's Defense Research and Development Organization.

Washington imposed sanctions on India and archrival Pakistan after the two nations staged nuclear tests in May 1998.
