Australian Coal Strike

SYDNEY, Australia -- Coal miners in Australia began a 24-hour strike Friday in a move that could cost the country's largest commodity export industry nearly $20 million in lost production.

The strike was called Thursday by the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, which is campaigning for 125 workers who were recently dismissed f rom the Oakdale mine in New South Wales state to receive their entitlements of more than 6 million Australian dollars ($3.9 million)

The strike was expected to affect up to 20,000 coal miners in about 100 mines, mostly in the states of New South Wales and Queensland.
