Airline Pact Approved

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- European Union antitrust regulators Wednesday cleared the long-term alliance between KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Italy's national carrier Alitalia SpA., after the airlines agreed to end their monopoly on flights between Amsterdam and the Italian hubs at Milan and Rome.

The European Commission said KLM and Alitalia pledged to allow competitors to operate up to four daily flights on the Amsterdam-Rome and Amsterdam-Milan routes, including two at peak times, and to take other measures to open up competition on the routes.
