Wire-Rod Plant Opens

YEKATERINBURG, Ural Mountains -- Copper producer Uralelektromed has opened a new plant which will produce at least 40,000 tons of copper wire rod per year, the plant's chief executive told reporters.

Andrei Kozitsyn was speaking at a ceremony to open the new facility in the Urals town of Verkhnyaya Pyshma, where Uralelektromed is based.

He said the design capacity of the plant, which cost $50 million, was 235,000 tons of copper wire rod, but a further increase in its output would depend on domestic consumption.
