Win Gives Spartak 13 Point Lead

Champion Spartak Moscow has moved 13 points clear in the premier division after a 4-1 home thrashing of Zenit St. Petersburg.

Spartak took advantage of CSKA Moscow in Champions League action and Lokomotiv Moscow's 1-1 draw at Saturn Ramenskoye to further distance itself from its closest challengers with the win Wednesday.

Russian international Yevgeny Kharlachyov gave Lokomotiv a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute before Maxim Buznikin, on loan from Spartak, equalized for Saturn as the first half ran out.

Both Spartak and Zenit had several first-choice players missing due to injury and suspension but it had little effect on the Muscovites, who virtually sealed victory with two goals in the first seven minutes.

Viktor Bulatov scored for Spartak in the third minute, and four minutes later league top scorer Andrei Tikhonov doubled the tally with a penalty after a foul on fellow Russian international Yegor Titov. Spartak wasted several good scoring chances in the first half before Alexander Shirko made it 3-0 from a Tikhonov cross shortly after the interval.

Striker Alexander Panov, Zenit's biggest threat, was held well in check by the Spartak defense until the 67th minute, when he tapped in a rebound.

Titov restored the three-goal cushion nine minutes later with a long range effort.
