WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

Intimate Opera

Music sounds better in small halls, and Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades" is no exception. On Friday night in the ballroom of the Kuskovo Estate, enjoy an intimate performance of the opera based on Pushkin's story about love, death and cards. Singers will include soloists from the Bolshoi Theater, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater and the Novaya Opera. The overture starts at 7 p.m. Friday in the Kuskovo Estate palace ballroom, 2 Ulitsa Yunosti, Tel. 375-5252 / 370-0151, Metro: Ryazansky Prospekt.

An Old Standard

A patch of land becomes an aristocratic family's only connection to the past in Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard," playing at the Sovremennik Theater on Friday. Marina Neyolova stars in this strictly traditional rendition of the theatrical warhorse, which explores the clash between tradition and change. The play begins at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sovremennik Theater, 19A Chistoprudny Bulvar, Tel. 921-6473, Metro: Chistye Prudy.

Melancholic Melodies

On another note, you can really get down at Chizh and Co.'s midnight concert at Paris Life. The sad lyrics and slow melodies of the St. Petersburg-based band have made the group into a big hit across the country. The concert starts at midnight at Paris Life, 3 Karetny Ryad, Tel. 209-2076, Metro: Pushkinskaya.
