War Crimes Probed

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Lithuania has begun a war-crimes investigation of a naturalized U.S. citizen who is suspected of being an aide-de-camp for a Nazi military unit that executed thousands of Jews during the 1941-44 German occupation, the Baltic News Service reported Wednesday.

The report said prosecutors contend that Petras Bernotavicius, 77, was responsible for delivering execution orders to death squads.

Eli Rosenbaum, head of the U.S. Justice Department's Nazi-hunting Office of Special Investigations, declined to say whether Bernotavicius is under investigation by the OSI.
