Trophy Art Law Open

MOSCOW -- A ruling by the Constitutional Court on art the Soviet army took from Nazi Germany after World War II does not bar the return of individual objects, the court's chairman said Thursday.

The Constitutional Court struck down parts of a law Tuesday that would have effectively prevented the return of Russia's World War II "trophy art.'' But the court upheld articles saying Russia was not obliged to return the art to governments of "aggressor nations'' ? meaning Germany and its wartime allies.

The Soviet army systematically took more than 1 million books, paintings, coins and other pieces of art from Germany after defeating the Nazis in 1945.
