Tax Police Catch 6,000

MOSCOW -- The head of the tax police, one of the government's main weapons in filling its coffers, said Thursday that it was doing well in finding tax cheats but was uncovering only a small share of the crimes.

Tax police chief Vyacheslav Soltaganov said 6,000 cases of tax evasion were uncovered in the first half of the year. But he added: "The figure ? is in my opinion a drop in the ocean." He said the tax police hoped to boost this figure as by as much as six times this year.

Soltaganov said that the tax service's efforts had added an extra 4.8 billion rubles ($197.9 million) to the budget in 1999, compared with total expected revenues of 236 billion this year.
