Six Soldiers Freed

MOSCOW -- Russian security forces on Tuesday freed six soldiers abducted earlier this month by kidnappers from Chechnya, Interfax reported.

The hostages were released during a "special operation" without any "ransom or exchange," Interfax quoted Ingush police officials as saying.

The servicemen were kidnapped July 5 by unidentified Chechens from the southern city of Vladikavkaz close to Chechnya. They were held in the basement of a home in Chechnya, and were regularly beaten with canes, Vladimir Kozlov, a Foreign Ministry official, told Itar-Tass.

Officials say dozens of Russians and foreigners are currently held in Chechnya, a separatist region in southern Russia.
