Russians Reject West

MOSCOW -- Nearly half of Russians don't want U.S. investment in the area where they live, apparently because their resentment of U.S. influence outweighs any suffering from poverty, a poll released Friday indicated.

Forty-six percent of respondents in a June 19 poll by the independent Public Opinion Fund said they didn't want Americans to invest in their home regions or republics. The figure marked a sharp increase from the 32 percent who opposed U.S. investment in 1995, according to a similar poll by the same agency.

No margin of error was given for the poll of 1,500 people throughout Russia.
