Russia Agrees on Gas

UNITED NATIONS -- Russia on Tuesday abandoned its weeklong bid to preserve tiny amounts of the deadly nerve gas VX left behind in a UN laboratory in Baghdad, diplomats said.

Moscow agreed with other Security Council members that seven vials of VX could be destroyed but experts from UNSCOM, the special UN commission in charge of Iraqi disarmament, would have to answer questions about the samples.

At issue was an attempt by Russia, backed at times by Iraqi supporters France and China, to have the chemical agents analyzed, suggesting the UN weapons inspectors might have daubed VX on Iraqi warheads to fabricate evidence against Baghdad.
