Rotor-Alania Match Halted In Protest Over Officiating

A premier league match between Alania Vladikavkaz and visiting Rotor Volgograd was abandoned after 65 minutes Wednesday when the Rotor players walked off in protest over the refereeing.

With the score at 1-1, Rotor coach Viktor Prokopenko called his team off the pitch after two controversial decisions by referee Viktor Anokhin.

First, Anokhin nullified a goal by Rotor in the 64th minute. Then, seconds later, he awarded a penalty kick for the home side, infuriating Prokopenko. Earlier in the match, Alania's Georgian striker Georgy Demetradze had kept his five-game goal-scoring streak intact with his 15th of the season.

League officials are in the process of reviewing the game, but will likely penalize Rotor with a 3-0 loss, Sport Express reported Thursday.

Elsewhere, Andrei Tikhonov scored with nine minutes left to give Spartak Moscow a hard-earned 2-1 win at Shinnik Yaroslavl.

Dmitry Khlestov had put Spartak ahead after 32 minutes but Alexei Bychkov scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute, sending the Shinnik fans into a frenzy.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as Tikhonov hit a rebound into an empty net for the winner.

Meanwhile, Lokomotiv Moscow came from behind at home to beat Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod 3-1.
