Protest in Tbilisi

TBILISI, Georgia -- At least 180 supporters of the late Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia were occupying his home Wednesday as part of a hunger strike to demand the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze.

A handful of Gamsakhurdia's followers launched the hunger strike June 18, but the numbers have since swollen, said Nana Chachua, spokeswoman for Gamsakhurdia's widow, Manana, who was leading the protest.

Gamsakhurdia was president when Georgia won independence with the 1991 Soviet collapse, then was ousted in 1992 and fought a short war in a bid to return to power. He died in mysterious circumstances in 1994.
