Population Talks Tense

UNITED NATIONS -- Conservative Catholic and Islamic states clashed with moderate countries over abortion, sex education and parental rights at a special UN General Assembly session on population that opened Wednesday.

"Our deliberations have been very fruitful and at the same time difficult and extremely strenuous," Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, UN representative of Bangladesh, said at the start of the three-day, 170-nation debate.

The Bangladesh diplomat chaired a preparatory committee that was expected to continue negotiations through Friday on a population and development deal struck in Cairo five years ago.
