New Iraq Policy Pushed

MOSCOW -- Russia wants to scrap a UN weapons commission in Iraq and find another way to monitor Baghdad's compliance with a ban on its arms program, an official said Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Vladimir Rakhmanin reiterated Moscow's charge that the United Nations special commission had exceeded its powers and used "obviously provocative'' methods, Interfax reported.

The comment came during a surprise visit to Moscow by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz.

Rakhmanin didn't specify how Russia wants to replace the UN weapons monitors, but Moscow has demanded that another group be used and international sanctions against Iraq be lifted.
