Musical Jackets

NEW YORK -- Researchers at MIT have come up with the Musical Jacket, an off-the-peg Levi's denim jacket that has been transformed into a musical instrument, complete with keyboard, synthesizer and speakers.

The item, designed by E. Rehmi Post and Maggie Orth, is one of the first tangible products from MIT's Media Lab.

Embroidered over the left pocket of the Musical Jacket is the keypad, which overlays a circuit board. When it's "played," the circuit activates a MIDI synthesizer that sends signals to the speaker. The Musical Jacket's components weigh less than 500 grams, including batteries.
