Moscow Region Ablaze

MOSCOW -- Fires were raging in peat bogs and forests near Moscow on Wednesday as Russia suffered from a heat wave of record length and intensity.

Officials were worried that the flames could spread if the unusually high temperatures continued, although no buildings were currently under threat from the fires.

The heat wave, with temperatures staying as high as 30 degrees Celsius for weeks, and little rain have caused blazes in many areas of the country.

"The fire situation around Moscow is very serious, and it might become very dangerous in some areas if the weather continues," Dmitry Odintsov, an official of the Federal Forest Service, said. "Unfortunately, we have an unfavorable weather forecast for the near future."
